The metaverse can be described as a collection of interconnected and persistent virtual spaces, accessible via the Internet, that mimic or extend the physical world. Within it, virtual reality (VR) plays a crucial role, presenting itself in two main forms: immersive and non-immersive.
Immersive virtual reality provides an experience that isolates the user from the physical environment and completely transports them into a virtual space. This is achieved through the use of VR headsets that fully cover the eyes, spatial audio headphones, and sometimes haptic feedback devices that together create a highly engaging experience. Users can interact with the virtual environment in ways that mimic real-world interactions, such as walking, touching, or manipulating objects. This mode is ideal for deep and detailed explorations of complex scenarios, such as a walkthrough of a production facility or the simulation of work processes in the fashion industry.
Unlike the immersive version, non-immersive virtual reality does not require complete isolation from the physical environment. This type of VR can be experienced through computer screens or mobile devices, where users interact with the virtual world through an on-screen representation. Non-immersion allows users to remain aware and active in their real environment while interacting with the virtual content, facilitating accessibility and use in a variety of contexts, such as the classroom or office.
In our project, the application of both immersive and non-immersive virtual reality allows the metaverse experience to be adapted to the specific needs of the users. For example, immersive virtual reality is perfect for intensive and detailed training on craftsmanship techniques, while non-immersive virtual reality can be used for lighter and more accessible training sessions, or for visualising general information content.
Integrating both types of virtual reality into the metaverse enables the creation of a more flexible and inclusive environment, which not only expands the ways of learning and collaboration but also makes the technology more accessible to a wide range of users.
In our European project, we use 360-degree VR technology to capture and make immersive the experience of different production steps in the footwear, tannery, and clothing industries. These recordings allow users to be transported directly to the production sites, offering an unprecedented educational and training experience. Virtual reality, especially in the metaverse, becomes an invaluable tool for training and transferring technical knowledge.
Advantages of the Single Player Mode in the Project
1. Customised training: In single player mode, users can navigate through the 360-degree video recordings to explore specific techniques and production processes independently. This allows them to focus on particular processing techniques, understand in detail the machinery or craft methods that interest them the most, and revisit these sessions as needed, optimising individual learning.
2. Pressure-free learning: Working alone removes social pressure and allows users to explore mistakes and solutions without fear of judgement, fostering a more relaxed and personal learning environment where users can take their time to assimilate new information.
3. Accessibility and Flexibility: The single player mode allows users to access training content at any time and from anywhere, making training compatible with other work or personal commitments, and allowing for greater integration of professional training into daily life.
Advantages of the Multiplayer Mode in the Project
1. Collaborative Simulation of Work Environments: The multiplayer mode allows the simulation of real work environments where collaboration is essential. Users can work together on a single piece or project, experiencing team management and coordination in real time, which is particularly useful for training on soft skills in teamwork.
2. Feedback and Innovation: Real-time collaboration allows users to share immediate feedback, suggestions and innovative ideas. This interaction enriches the learning experience, accelerating the improvement of techniques and the adoption of new practices in the industry.
3. Professional Networking: Multiplayer mode not only facilitates collaboration on specific projects, but also opens up networking opportunities, allowing users to build professional relationships with colleagues and industry experts from around the world. This can translate into career opportunities, future collaborations and exchange of best practices on an international level.
In summary, both modes offer significant advantages specifically tailored to our project. The choice between single player and multiplayer can depend on the user's specific needs and learning objectives, making the metaverse an extremely versatile and adaptable environment for education and training in the fashion and manufacturing industry.
